本文是一篇英语词汇学论文,本研究对初中英语词汇教学提出以下建议:第一,教师应以学生为主体,设计能够激发学生热情和自主性的课堂活动,鼓励学生积极参与到课堂互动,调动学习积极性。

Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Research Background

As the global economy and cultural exchanges continue to expand,English has becomea vital tool for global economic and social development.In particular,in the realm of culturalEducation,English plays an increasingly crucial role.Serving as the cornerstone andconnector of the English language,vocabulary runs through the entire process of Englishlearning and forms the fundamental basis for mastering other aspects of the language.Thebreadth of one’s vocabulary directly impacts his English proficiency and serves as a keydeterminant of foreign language learning performance.Additionally,vocabulary plays anintegral role in the middle school entrance examination,significantly influencing the Englishachievement and learning motivation of contemporary junior high school students.

Despite its importance,the current state of vocabulary instruction in junior high schoolsis not entirely satisfactory:effective vocabulary learning strategies are limited,andvocabulary learning efficiency is not high.

It’s well known that learning strategy plays a great role in improving learningachievement.However,the deficiency in teachers’guidance has led to a dire need forenhancement in students’vocabulary learning strategy,notably in the realms ofmeta-cognitive strategy and memory strategy,which are found to be considerably lacking.Some educators may employ a teaching technique where the teacher simply pronounces thewords for students to repeat,followed by mechanical reading and memorization of relatedphrases.Dictation may be used as a means to assess students’vocabulary retention.In theabsence of effective strategies and skills,students are relegated to mechanical memorization,heavily reliant on rote learning.This not only squanders valuable time but also fails toachieve any substantial breakthrough in vocabulary acquisition.Consequently,this approachexacerbates the learning burden and psychological stress on students,gradually fostering aresistance towards the memorization and learning of English vocabulary.Ultimately,thisaversion culminates in a loss of interest in English learning.

1.2 Research Significance

Learning a language includes learning phonetics,grammar,and vocabulary,amongwhich vocabulary learning is extremely important.British linguist George W.Wilkins(1972)pointed out in his book Linguistics in Language Teaching:“Without grammar,very little canbe conveyed,without vocabulary,nothing can be conveyed.”McCarthy(1990),a lexicologist,more vividly pointed out the importance of vocabulary:“No matter how well the studentlearns grammar,no matter how successfully he masters the sound of a L2,without words toexpress a wide range of means,communication in that language cannot happen in anymeaningful way”.The two sentences are enough to make us realize the importance ofvocabulary learning.The National English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022 edition)(NECS)sets out higher requirements for English vocabulary learning in thecurriculum content section:the new standards stipulating the vocabulary students shouldmastered in junior high school has increased to about 400 words compared with the oldstandard for compulsory education.
