Chapter One Task Description
1.1 Background of the Task
The consecutive interpreting practice themed on the Belt and Road Initiative’s impacton some regions,was completed through the online platform Zoom.The interviewerinvited two young scholars from Turkey(Ezgi)and Indonesia(Raul)majoring ininternational political relations.The interview was conducted in the form of questions inChinese and answers in English,and interpreter was the consecutive interpreter in thecourse of the interview.The length of each round of consecutive interpreting wasdominated by length of the foreign youth’s answers,which was about one minute,and thetotal length of the question-and-answer session audio was 60 minutes.The interviewquestions focused on exploring the impacts of the Belt and Road Initiative on Turkey andIndonesia.
The Belt and Road Initiative has received mixed reviews.Its proponents assert that itfosters win-win cooperation,economic growth,and enhances interactions among differentnations.The interviewer was deeply engrossed in the topic and conducted direct interviewswith young scholars in the regions concerned,aiming to enhance his understanding of theinitiative through conversations with young expatriates.The decision to involve aninterpreter was largely motivated by the interpreter’s interest in the initiative.In thisconsecutive interpreting practice,not only has he gained a deeper understanding of thespecific impact of the Belt and Road Initiative on different regions,but in addition,throughthe analysis of the consecutive interpreting practice,he has a better chance to tap into thecultural and linguistic barriers involved,and to improve his cross-cultural understanding ofthe countries along the route.
1.2 Language Features of Interviewees
English is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world,while in two regions,Turkey and Indonesia,Indonesian English and Turkish English,as variants used bynon-native speakers,have a number of cultured features different from formal English.Inthe following,we discuss the characteristics of the English varieties used by theinterviewer and the interviewees,with regard to linguistic differences,culture,phonology,and logic of thinking,and analyze the challenges and considerations that may be faced inthe practice of consecutive interpreting.
1.2.1 Linguistic Differences
Turkish scholars tend to use Turkish English(Turkish English)as manifested in anumber of Turkish grammatical constructions and language-specific expressions(Aydınlıand Deniz 225).For example,Turkish English may include Turkish structures orvocabulary that are not common in Standard English,such as the use of“inşallah”to mean“I hope so”or“if God wills it”,such as“if God wills it”,“if God wills it”,and“if Godwills it”,as in“yallah”(to refuel)or“nazarboncuğu”(eye amulet)(Göksel and Kerslake55).
