ween no equals. Birdwhistell describes some posture differences between the two genders involving leg, arm, and pelvis positioning. He believes these are among the most easily recognizable gender identification signals. In fact, he indicates that leg angle and arm-body angle can be measured exactly. Women giving off gender signals are said to bring their legs together, sometimes even to the extent that their upper legs cross or they stand knee over knee. As for arm-body carriage, females are said to keep their upper arms close to the trunk, while the males moves the arms 5 to 10 degrees away from the body. Males may carry the pelvis rolled slightly back and females slightly forward. In movement, females supposedly present the entire body from neck to ankles as a moving whole. Males, in contrast, move the arms independently from the trunk. Males tend to assume relaxed posture and expand into available apace, while females tend to assume tense, condensed postures, taking up as little space as possible.
The following list illustrates the inconvenience of the public postures permitted to women:
1. Sit down in a straight chair. Your legs at the ankles and keep your pressed together.
2. Bend down to pick up an object from the floor. Each time your bend, remember to bend your knees so that rear end doesn't stick up, and place one hand on your shirt-front to hold it to your chest.
3. Run a short distance, keeping your knees together. You will find you have to take short, high steps.
4. Sit comfortably on the floor…Arrange your legs to that no one can see your underwear; Sit like this a long time without changing position.
5. Walk down a city street …Look straight ahead. Every time a man walks past you, avert your eyes and make your face expressionless.
6. Walk around with your stomach pulled in tight, your shoul ders thrown back, and your chest out...Try to speak loudly and aggressively in this posture
2.4 Gesture
“Every little gesture has a meaning all its own.” In viewing nonverbal gesture of preschool children, one investigator discussed that girls exhibited more pronounced bodily behavior when they were with other girls than they when they were with boys. When they were paired with boys, they tended to be quieter.
As for differences between the two genders in the kinds of gestures used, through years of hard working, Peterson observed the following:
Females
tend to leave both hands down on chair arms more than males do
arrange or play with their hair or ornamentation more
Males
use sweeping gesture more than females
use arms to lift or move the body position more
use closed fist more
stroke chin more
sit with ankle of one leg crossing the knee of the other more
tend to exhibit greater amount of leg and foot movement
tap their feet more
Female
hand or hands in lap
tapping hands
legs crossed at knees
ankles crossed, knees slightly apart
Male
stretching hands and cracking knuckles
pointing
both feet on floor with legs apart
legs stretched out, ankles crossed
knees spread apart when sitting
3. Some causes of gender differences
What are the possible explanations for gender differences in communication? In my opinion, there are several main ways to account for such differences.
3.1 Social causes
In the writer’s opinion, social causes must be the
