In 1958, Sima Qian: Grand Historian of China was issued in both New York and London, with a first printing in 1958 and a second printing in 1963, with copyright reserved to Columbia University Press(see contents in Table 2-4). Records of the Grand Historian: Han Dynasty I&II are completely consistent to the first edition in terms of volume selection, with the “Some Remarks on the Han Peers” section being divided into three parts, corresponding to volumes 17, 18, and 19. Shiji as an outstanding historical work with high historical value, not only for future generations created basic annals, biographies and accounts, chronological tables, hereditary houses, treatises such history genre, it supports the independent status of historiography and establishes the literary tradition of historical biography. 

According to Wang Changhua, Sima Qian broke through the distinctive boundaries of literature and history since the Spring and Autumn Period and “introduced literature into history, incorporating non-historical descriptions into the historical narrative”, collecting a large amount of historical materials and adding and embellishing them, even rewriting and reshaping history to make various historical figures come to life and full of images (Wang, 1992: 39). Chen Qitai points out that Sima Qian’s high status in literary history is due to “the high achievement in the use of language in Shiji, which is extremely expressive, flexible in syntax, precise, condensed, and vivid” (Chen, 1999: 59); in terms of narrative, the literary character of Shiji is also inseparable from Sima Qian’s storytelling, fictionalization, and lyricism in historical narrative.
