1.3 Significance of the Study

The significance of this research lies in two aspects，both from the theoretical andpractical perspectives.Theoretical significanceTheoretically speaking，there is the chance that this essay might contribute to thedevelopment and fusion of literary criticism, feminist narratology and feministtranslation theories. In the first place, literary translation has long been considered animportant category in the field of translation. The fact that the object of literarytranslation is literary work distinguishes it from other categories of translation such astechnical translation which deals with functional texts. Thus literary translation notonly requires translators to deal with difficulties inherent in translation, but alsodemands them to take into consideration the aesthetic aspects of the text, the style andthe distinguished features of the original writing. The translation of the novel APrivate Life as examined in this essay stands as a perfect example for literarytranslation studies, with its peculiar feminist theme and bold experimentation withlanguage. Thus the research of this essay might help to provide more insight forliterary translation studies.Secondly, the twentieth century has witnessed the great development of feministliterature theories in the international academic field, with various feminist schools ofliterary critics. Translators and researchers have more and more realized the necessityof introducing theory of feminist theories into literary translation study as acomplement to the traditional linguistic approaches to the study of translation. Yetcurrently in China, study in this field is still relatively scarce. This thesis is an attemptto apply feminist and literary theories into literary translation studies, by focusing onthe rendering of the gendered theme and aesthetic effect of literary work.By applying frontier literary and translation theories into actual translationpractice of the distinct avant-garde feminist novel A Private Life，this essay is meantto shed light on literary translation practice，especially in the translation andintroduction of modern Chinese feminist literature.According to Wang Ning (Wang Ning, 2002), “the rise of female writing incontemporary China has attracted the attention of overseas sinologists as well ascomparatists who are interested in Oriental culture and literature, including Chineseculture and literature." The popularity of Chinese feminist literature in theinternational arena calls for more and better translations of them. On the other hand，the grotesque manipulation of language in the feminist literature poses great difficultyfor their English translators with the ambition of faithfully delivering its innovativeform and gendered theme to the target readers. Up till now, only some or therepresentative works of modern Chinese feminist novelists are translated andintroduced into the English world.Confronted with this dilemma, this research studies a special literary trend ofmodern Chinese feminist fiction，and focuses on its most distinguished characteristic,which is, the bold language innovation, or in other words, the deliberate deviation oftraditional male-centric language stereotype.
