Learning is also a process that occurs best when the new knowledge is relevant to students and also when the students are engaged in constructing their understanding and knowledge by connecting what they are learning with prior experience. Learning can occur best in the environment which contains harmonious relationships and interactions, order and comfort. 2.2 Studies of the student-centered mode at home
Tian Jiushong(2004) promoted that the student-centered mode can be used in the English reading class in middle school. Reading class under student-centered mode means students can finish different kinds of activities and tasks independently under the guide of the teacher. This mode aims to cultivate students’ reading ability and their independent learning ability. Teaching process of this mode emphasizes both Student-Subject-Position and Teacher-Leading-Factor. Teacher changes the role which always push students learn in the class and they become the guide, facilitator, helper and partner of students. Teachers have more responsibility in designing reading activities and promoting their teaching methods because teachers play an important role in developing students’ reading ability which include literal understanding ability and information-processing ability(Lu, 2001) He also emphasized that reading class under the student-centered mode should pay attention to the interaction, interest, operability diversity and expansion. Interaction means that readers should interact with the author and also the text. Interest means that the reading material and reading activities should be related to students’ daily life and can make them think independently. Operability means reading activities should be suitable and last ten or fifteen minutes. Diversity means the forms of the reading activity should be various which may include group work, role play and discussion. Expansion means that the reading activity is helpful to cultivate students’ innovation ability and imagination.
