Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1 The background of the research
English is a worldwide language and the teaching mode and teaching method are explored by the scholars all over the world. It is a historical innovation to find out proper teaching ways to help student master English well. Teaching mode is also changing in the English class. But the effect is far from satisfactory. Findings show that no teaching mode or teaching method is an absolute success in the English teaching process (Shu, 1996). Student-centered mode has brought great revolution in English teaching in China. Students’ creative thinking has been developed (Jia, 2003). This mode has brought big success in English teaching at the college level. But the application in the low level is still need to be explored. In 2002, the reform of English teaching has been strengthened through adapting a revised version of the New English Curriculum. This version put forward a lot of suggestions which aims to develop students’ comprehensive competence of English. And some specific learning strategies are provided in this version. More and more people find the significance of the effects of individual differences, which claims the changes and development of the teaching mode (Brown, 1994). Appropriate teaching mode can raise learners’ autonomy and cultivate their learning strategies such as goal-oriented and problem-solving based efforts (Benson 1997). There are many kinds of strategies and the meta-cognitive strategies because they are related to the learners’ autonomy closely ( Lin, 2006). Previous research mainly focused on the links between autonomy and meta-cognitive strategies. Different theories are put forward to help students learn writing or reading. In china more and more researchers pay attention to student-centered mode which is thought helpful to improve students’ interests. In the aspect of English teaching and learning student-centered mode has been carried out. From the previous findings we can see the student-centered mode can help students increase their learning interests in English. The harmonious atmosphere in the class make students learn with little anxiety. While no research is carried out in the aspect of English tense under the student-centered mode.
