ot proper for us to take it for granted that they can be applied in China,Although the researches on Task-based Language Teaching and learning have been donefor many years, the systematic research and practice on Task-based Language Teachingis very late in China. Some quality studies on the basic theory of Task-based LanguageTeaching and its use in school English teaching have been carried out.Compared with the western language learning theories and practice, it seems thatthe education situation in China has to be changed by researchers' joint efforts. ManyChinese researchers have made training experiments to develop TBLT in EFL, some ofwhom have made great success. Besides, there is still more room for improvement in theeffective use of TBLT in primary schools. The primary goal of foreign language learningis to develop the ability to use real and appropriate language to communicate andinteract with others. Like many governments throughout the world, China have beenregularly reforming Elementary Education to increase, educational standards so as toensure that more young people can have the appropriate knowledge and skills in thefierce international competition for economic success.


Chapter 2 literature review


This chapter presents a literature review, including conceptual definitions of somekey terms, theoretical support, and a brief description of previous studies both at homeand abroad.


2.1 Introduction to Task in TBLT
Task is the most important concept in TBLT. In this part, the author introduces somedetailed definitions, characteristic of a task, the contents of a task and the types of tasks.


2.1.1 Definitions and Characteristics of a Task
As far as the concept of task is concerned, it has been defined in a variety of ways.Long's definition (1985): A task is a piece of work for oneself or for others, freelyor for some reward. Thus, examples of tasks include painting a fence, dressing a child,filling out a form, buying a pair of shoes, making an airline reservation'"In other words,task is meant the hundred and one things people do in everyday life, at work, at play, andin between.Richard, Piatt and Weber's definition (1986): An activity or action which is carriedout as the result of processing or understanding language (i.e. as a response). Forexample, drawing a map while listening to a tape, listening to an instruction andperforming a command, may be referred to as tasks. Task may or may not involve theproduction of language. A task usually requires the teacher to specify what will beregarded as successful completion of the task.
