Chapter One Introduction
With accelerated pace of globalization, the exchanges among different countries have become more and more frequent. English is widely spoken in international trade, politics, military, culture,
Education sphere and so on. The communication ability is highly emphasized than ever. Thus every country, regardless of big or small, poor of wealthy, attaches much significance to English language education since primary school period. Due to this, learning English in primary school is important to develop students’ English listening and speaking ability. In order to cultivate students’ communicative competence gradually and empower them to communicate with others in English freely and appropriately, the foreign teachers are being employed to teach English by many primary schools.
1.1 Research background
Nowadays lots of foreign teachers have come to teach English in China. They are mainly teaching in the universities and secondary schools in economic developed areas, fewer in primary schools in poor areas. However, in fact, many schools in China complain foreign teachers’ teaching. Their teaching contents are casual and unsystematic. They have insufficient understanding on Chinese culture and students. Their teaching job in China is temporary, and management of foreign teachers is too causal (HaoYujuan 99). Many primary schools say that they don’t get the expected outcomes though having spent lots of money. And for students in primary schools, they have lost their interests in foreign language classes due to no improvements of their listening and speaking ability. There are some researches about English listening and speaking ability in primary school period. The National English Curriculum for the Obligatory Education (2011 Edition) published by the Ministry of Education holds the students’ communicative competence is built on language skills, language knowledge, attitudes, learning
strategy and culture awareness. Among the English language skills, listening and speaking ability are highly stressed. It demands children should reach or pass Level 2 after graduating from Grade 6 in primary schools. And it demands the students in Grade Three should reach the Level 1(13).
