Conclusion


This thesis mainly focuses on comparative studies on both Chinese and Englishaddress terms. In the first place, it offers a relatively comprehensive comparison andcontrast between Chinese and English address terms. The differences lie in roughlysix categories: constituent order of the address terms; different usage of names; fictivekinship terms; post and rank terms; popular address terms; and politeness principle.It also explores the reasons of the differences between Chinese and English addressterms. As a part of language, address terms are conditioned by culture and then reflectculture; therefore, the cultural differences lead to the differences between Chinese andEnglish address terms. Chinese culture is characterized by the agricultural society, thepatriarchal clan system and Confucianism which focuses on ethics. In China, societyis a big family and family is a small society, thus family and society are in the twomajor extremes of the social relationship which is complementary and vertical. Thewestern culture values individualism and equality and thus embraces the symmetricaland horizontal solidarity relationship.Moreover, it analyzes probable problems posed by Chinese and English address termsin cross-cultural communication, translation and language teaching and then putsforward some suggestions. In cross-cultural communication, it is better to develop thecultural consciousness and learn some strategies; in translation, three factors shouldbe kept in mind: cultural differences; relationship between the interlocutors; andcontext; in teaching, teaching Chinese address terms to foreign learners are muchmore complex than teaching Chinese students English addressing terms. In addition tolearning address terms in classroom and from lectures introducing culturebackgrounds, students are encouraged to practice more-not only in classroom but alsoin communication with native speakers.However, limitations exist in the present thesis. First, pragmatic functions of addressterms are mentioned but not observed in-depth.Second, though practical programs in translation are proposed in chapter five,translation strategies provided, discovered and analyzed are inadequate. A lot of extraefforts are demanded to provide systematic and justified explanation of translationstrategies.Third, address terms referred in this thesis are confined within those commonly used.However, there are certain terms pertaining sociolinguistics, such as the influence offeminist movement, or discrimination, which have been left over duo to inadequateresearches. Further studies are to be completed in the effort to provide useful advicesand suggestions to language workers.To sum up, addressing is a phenomenon of rather complexity. Though the thesis is justa tentative exploration of it and not very exhaustive, the author still hopes it will be ofsome help to intercultural communication and stimulate others to do more research onthis topic.
