Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 William Shakespeare

英语论文范文怎么写

William Shakespeare, born in 1564 and died in 1616, is one of the most distinguished litterateur who is widely known in Britain, in Europe and even in the world. As a poet, he had wrote 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems and some other poems in all. His achievements on sonnets are remarkable enough to win a place for him in the literary field. However, his plays equally make a great contribution to his fame in the world. As a dramatist, he did well in applying what he had learned from his work and life in the theater into his play writings and made them great hits to audiences, gradually growing up from a stableman to the shareholder of his theatre company and finally the literary giant with his works being enjoyed great prestige in the world. Whether from the language or the writing techniques, Shakespeare’s talent in dramatic composition is hard to be hidden and that’s why he could become the benchmark and bring the summit of the development of British theatre. He had left us 37 plays in total, consist of comedies, historical plays, tragedies and legendary plays. The most well-known works are his “four great comedies” and “four great tragedies”. Due to his extraordinary achievements on tragedies, many scholars think he is quite qualified for being ranked with the three great tragedians of Ancient Greece, collectively called as the four great tragedians in the history of drama. His creations of tragedies are the exploration of human nature and the realest mirror of the ethical appearance of his time, which resonate with readers to a great extent.

1.2 King Lear

King Lear, wrote in 1605 and played in 1606, is a tragedy with the same characteristics of his historical plays. It was adapted from the history of King Leir. It’s  consist of two interacting family lines. With the references to The True Chronicle History of King Leir and his Three Daughters: Goneril, Ragan and Coredella and British chronicler Geoffery of Monmouth’s Historia Regum Britanniae, Lear’s family line in the play was set but Shakespeare rewrote the fate of Cordelia which made it more tragic. And some creative materials of the branch line Gloucester’s family are originated from Sir Philip Sidney’s Acadia. Different from these references, Shakespeare adds more characters and combines with the cultural contexts of his own time making his version richer with more dramatic and realistic significance.

It superficially narrates two noble families’ tragedies in the 8th century mixed with political struggles but in fact, it reflects the subversion and disorders of British societies of 8th and 16th centuries. King Lear intends to hand his executive power over to his daughters by dividing his land into three. He puts forward a love test that his daughters need to express their love to him orally. His elder daughters Goneril and Regan both give false and flattering love confessions to Lear for getting Lear’s power and lands. Different from her two sisters, Cordelia insists her own inner heart and honestly says that her love to him is simply out of her duty as his daughter which makes Lear so offensive that he later draws the biggest and best land kept 论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
