Chapter One  Introduction

1.1 Sherman Alexie and The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian

Alexie is a promising and prolific writer whose works, including poetry, short stories, novels, essays, reviews, and films, reflect his “anti-romantic view of Native life” (Ruppert, 2005) and deal with contemporary Indian reservation life through their struggles to survive from problems such as violence, addiction, racism, and psychological oppression (Moore, 2005). He, born in 1966 in Wellpinit, Washington, a small town in the Spokane Indian Reservation, is an Indian of Spokane and Coeur D’Alene tribal descent (Otfinoski, 2010: 99). He was born with hydrocephalus and underwent brain surgery when he was six months old, which, as expected by the doctor, may cause his death or mental impairment. Although survived the operation, he was plagued by chronic seizures. He had intelligence yet was unwelcome on the reservation since he spent most of his childhood reading alone in his room (Coulombe, 2011: 120). Suffering from being an outsider at the reservation school, he transferred to the public high school in Reardan, a town twenty miles away from his reservation, in his eighth grade. In Reardan, he did excellently in academics and sports and became “a star varsity basketball player” (Otfinoski, 2010: 99). His school achievement secured his admission to Spokane’s Jesuit Gonzaga University with a scholarship in 1985, but he withdrew after two years because of his abusing alcohol (McClinton-Temple & Velie, 2007: 9; Otfinoski, 2010: 99). He then attended Washington State University in Pullman in 1987, during which he started writing poetry and short stories.
1.2 Literature Review

The Diary has been widely praised and well-received in and outside the United States since its first publication in 2007. It has won several awards and has become a popular book in schools and school libraries. Its literary topics include personal identity, cultural conflicts, racism, friendship, and hope. It is one of the most frequently challenged books in schools and libraries, as a few parents complain about its offensive language, issues of racism, sex explicitness, unsuitability for a young age group, and violence, and as some Indian writers and critics criticize Alexie’s betrayal of Indian moral and social obligation. Many reviewers, however, believe that the book could be helpful to young readers who are looking for the strength to lift themselves out of adversities. In addition, some scholars encourage its use in classrooms.
Current studies on this novel are mainly about issues of cultural identity, the theme of integration, and its genre. Some researchers also explore the metaphor presented through the basketball game and the characters’ psychic experiences. Additionally, it is used for teaching English literature and EFL.

The majority of the studies on The Diary focus on the issue of identity construction reflected in the image of Junior, especially his struggle of being a “part-time Indian” on the reservation and a “part-time White” in the all-white Reardan High School. Among the studies abroad, Kertzer (2012) analyzes the multiple intertextual identities of this novel and the stereotypes of the Indians satirized by those illustrations. 论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
