alion, King of Cyprus, was a famous sculptor. He made anivory image of a woman so lovely that he fell in love with it. He embraced and kissed it everyday, but it remained a statue. In despair he went to Aphrodite’s shrine for help. He offeredrich sacrifice and made a passionate pray, which moved Aphrodite. Then she gave the statuelife. A faint color appeared on her cheeks, a gleam shone from her eyes and her lips opened assweet smile. Finally the work of his own hands became his wife. In Greek mythology,Aphrodite was not only the god of love and beauty, but also the god of desire. As wementioned before, human’s desire comes from three sources: soul, sense and flesh. The desireof soul produces friendship; the desire of sense generates respect; the desire of flesh givesbirth to lust; the combination of the three can produce love. Without love, beauty does notexist. It is Pygmalion’s love to his work that makes the statue the unity of soul and beauty.Similar to the Greek mythological archetype, Basil in Picture is also an excellent artist whocreates his best work of Dorian representing the harmony of soul and body. The artist putsinto the picture his own idolatry and worship of the physical embodiment of his artistic ideal.

Conclusion
The Picture of Dorian Gray, as Oscar Wilde’s only long novel and also his best work toreflect his artistic appreciation and ethical pursuit, expresses the moral theme as much aspossible and gives the criticism to the social and individual immoral behaviors, which makesthe work winning the immortal thoughts and artistic value. Oscar Wilde subverts the point ofview that art imitates life. Through the life analysis of Dorian’s pursuit of artistic beauty fromdegeneration to death, Wilde expresses his life outlook. The novel not only reflect Wilde’srebellious spirit, but also have a warning role for our modern society. The late Victorian era is under the rule of Puritanism which has its negative effect onconfining people’s body and soul. Due to the rapid development of modern Western industrialcivilization, on one hand it brings the material satisfaction, but on the other hand it also causesthe alienation and incomplete of humanity. The bourgeoisie gradually abandon the previousChristian moral value which used to maintain the daily conduct norm. Their lives areincreasingly corrupted. Be disappointed with the reality, the writers turns to pursue the pureland of art; meanwhile the development of science and philosophy also provides the conditionfor the writers to adopt new art skills. As the rebels and pioneers of that era, they pursue thesubjectivity and absoluteness of art and strive to depict people’s inner world. Wildeconsistently defies the conventions of Realism novel creation and opposes the creation modethat just according to the life in its true colors. He advocates using the beauty of the art torival the ugly of the social reality.
