Chapter Five Results and Discussions

This chapter is devoted to provide a description of the results obtained from ouranalysis and a discussion on the results. Section 5.1 provides a general pattern of stancebundles used in the RAs in the discipline of applied linguistics. Meanwhile, the resultsfrom the comparative analysis are also listed here. Section 5.2 explains the two mainreasons for the different use of stance bundles by English expert writers and advancedChinese writers.

5.1 Stance Bundles in RAs in Applied Linguistics

The use of stance bundles is a meaningful and appropriate way to transmitinformation, thus they are particularly important for academic writing. The data-basedanalysis in Chapter Four provides a whole feature of the stance bundles in the appliedlinguistics.The 113 target stance bundles obtained from the CERA-E corpus offer us thecommonly used ones in the academic discourse. Both of the English expert and advancedChinese writers use many of the target stance bundles, which indicate that Chinese writershave mastered the writing style of the target community. The results of the study alsoreveal the prominent features of research articles in which writers are seeking to highlighttheir findings and convince readers. A careful scrutiny to the stance bundles in the RAs inthe discipline of applied linguistics show that VP fragment structural and AP fragmentstructural stance bundles are more used by English expert writers marking their stance,attitudes in RAs; as to the functional category, epistemic stance bundles are morecommon in the RAs, especially the certainty stance bundles occur frequently to enhancevalidity of information. Thus, it is safe to say that, VP fragment structural, AP fragmentstructural and epistemic stance bundles are the typical muti-word stance resource in RAsin the discipline of applied linguistics.
