2.1.2 DUBAI INTERNATIONAL ACADEMIC CITY
DIAC was the second educational free zone set up in Dubai in 2007. It is at the centre of the region’s efforts to make the emirate into a new global hot spot for higher education.
DIAC has succeeded in strengthened its status as a leading destination for higher education in the region, catering to about 12,000 students. Currently it houses 32 institutes from various countries including the US, India, UK, France, Iran, Pakistan and Australia.
DIAC exhibits a high degree of quality control. Over the last three years, universities from 24 countries have applied to set up operations at Dubai International Academic City. The largest number of applications received from institutions have been from India, the US and the UK universities. On an average, only 15% of the applications are accepted.
On the whole, DIAC along with KV has put securely put Dubai on the map as an emerging global education destination.
2.2 DUBAI- THE HOTSPOT FOR EDUCATION
For years, students have been aspiring to go to US and Europe for higher education. But various factors combined, resulting in a dip in this demand. The economic crisis better known as the recession, racism, terrorist attacks and a few other reasons played an important part.
UAE is leading a rush of countries trying to curb the dominance of famous American and British universities namely Harvard, Yale, LSE. As of 2005 there were about 138 million students’ worldwide seeking university degrees, up by 40 percent in seven years, with English speaking countries like the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia finding it harder to meet the demand.
According to the Washington based Association of International Educators, the market of post-secondary students studying outside their home countries grew 49 percent between 1999 and 2004. The Australian testing company IDP Education projects the number of students seeking education abroad to triple by 2025 to 7.2 million. Dubai will hope to attract a number of these students to its universities.
