Chapter 4 Results and Discussions


4.1 Revealing the existing problems of Tourism English course through investigating learners’ present situation
According to Dudley-Evans and St John’ Model of needs analysis, presentsituation is about learners’ personal information, which encompasses learners’learning experience, learning strategies and expectation or motivation of learning.Besides the above-mentioned components, learners’ current language learningcondition is also a part of Present Situation analysis. This research mainly investigateslearners’ present level and current language learning condition from investigatingstudents’ attitudes towards their present Tourism English course relating to teacher’squality, teaching methodology, teaching material, course design and evaluation. Basedon the present situation analysis, the advantages and existing problems in the coursewill be analyzed.Among the 125 subjects, 99 students’ major is Tourism Management. Another 26students are from other majors such as Advertisements, History, International Trade,Educational Technology and social work. The rates of passing CET-4 and CET-6 showthat majority of the students have reached the standard that college students need toachieve. It also reveals that most students have got the qualification to learn ESPcourse because of the acquisition of basic English knowledge.The investigation of present situation analysis begins with the research onlearners’ attitude towards this course.

Conclusion


Applying needs analysis to Tourism English teaching is the most effective way toimprove the efficiency and quality of ESP learning, for needs analysis can handle withthe disparity between present teaching and learners’ needs. So it is imperative andcrucial to make a reform of Tourism English Teaching with the application of needsanalysis. If some of the knowledge taught in the class is not that learners want to learnand need to acquire in the job, students’ interest in learning Tourism English coursewill lower. Under the influence of low motivation and weak desire, the learning resultwouldn’t be optimistic. Combined with the problems concluded through analysis,some relevant suggestion concerning teachers’ quality, the adopting of TE teachingmethodology, the choosing of teaching material and the changing of evaluation arebeen put forward.
