摘要:This study takes the students selecting Tourism English course in a University asresearch subjects, which is a case study to see the current learning situation andstudents’ real learning needs to check if students’ learning needs are met.

red with learners’ expectation, we can know whether the existing TourismEnglish meets the learners’ needs. In order to fulfill learners’ objective, the authorstudies learners’ learning needs. From where learners stand, what teaching materialthey like best, what kind of teacher are their favorite teacher, what kind of teachingmethodology they expect, what suggestion of course design they have, what contentof test is the most valid and what learning strategies they adopt. Based on the analysisof learners’ expectation and the problems the present course exists, the research provides some suggestions to promote the development of Tourism English teaching.

Chapter 2 Literature Review


2.1 Background Knowledge of ESP
English for Specific Purpose can be abbreviated to ESP, whose concept is first putforward by Halliday in his book The Linguistic Science and Language Teaching in1964. This book presents a fact that the teaching content and teaching method shoulddepend on learner’s specific needs, such as, English for policeman, English forofficials of the law, for specialists in agriculture and so on. Though Halliday does notgive us a clear definition, it is no denying that his book marks the beginning of ESPstudy in applied linguistics. With the development of ESP study, more and moreresearchers try to use their own understanding to define the definition of ESP. Thereare several popular definitions of ESP to be reviewed here.Hutchinson and Waters define ESP as an approach rather than a product. Theymake a conclusion that “ESP is an approach to language teaching in which alldecisions as to content and method are based on the learner’s reason for learning”( Hutchinson &Waters, 1987:19). Here, learner’s reason for learning has attractedgreat attention. In another word, why do learners need to master a foreign language isthe basis of ESP, so the purpose of ESP teaching is to meet the needs of differentlearners.

2.2 Tourism English
Tourism English refers to the English language which is used for tourism, so it isthe combination of tourism knowledge and linguistic knowledge. According tolinguistics, Tourism English is a type of English. It is used in the services ofmiscellaneous sectors of tourism industry including all introductions. The purpose ofTourism English is to broaden learner’s English knowledge or capabilities in thetourism area. Learners should pay more attention to the styles and forms of TourismEnglish so that they can communicate smoothly in different tourism situations.With the boom of economy, more and more foreigners visit the place of interestin China, which stimulates the flourish of international tourism industry. The tourismservices are composed of transportation service, restaurant service and tourist spotservice. So English is widely used in taking an airplane, taking a train, taking a bus or booking restaurant and visiting tourist spots. English is the only internationallanguage. In order to advance Chinese tourism, the development of Tourism Englishbecomes more and more urgent and the talent for Tourism English becomes more andmore popular. To meet the social needs, many colleges open Tourism English course.
