Conclusions

As a great critical realism writer, Charles Dickens’ novel is a great devotion to the world literature. His hero of the novel- Oliver Twist has also become a famous and important image in the literature field. Dickens depicted the sharp contradiction of labor and capital of United Kingdom capitalist society. He revealed miserable life of lower class people and the hypocrisy of the bourgeoisie. In Oliver Twist, he bitterly attacks the hypocritical and cruel side of the upper class and the bourgeoisie. He gave realistic pictures of the horrible existence in workhouse. One of the important characteristics of Oliver was the real and specific description of people who lived at the bottom of society. He puts deep sympathy to the low class, especially women and little children. Meanwhile, he sings the praises of truth, goodness and beauty in human nature with idealism and Romanism sentiments. Charles Dickens led readers into a real but terrible life of underworld. His is successful in depicting a miserable image of child from lower class.
In the novel Oliver Twist, Dickens depicted a vivid character of little hero. He is pure, kind, ignorant in spite of the evil environment he is in. Although he is born without parents, he is natured in a miserable workhouse and he is abused by the gang of thieves, he still keeps his good virtue. From the opinions of Charles Dickens, some people are born with good virtue and he will not be influenced by the surrounding people or bad environment. Oliver Twist is a reprehensive of this kind of people. On the contrary, Dickens thinks that there are also some people who are easily influenced by the surrounding environment, just like Nancy . Perhaps Nancy is a good girl before she took part in the gang of thieves. However, after that, she is greatly influenced by the evil environment. But there are also kindnesses in the deep heart of Nancy. That is why she cold sacrifices herself to help Oliver from the gang of thieves. Nancy is just a representative of most common people. Most people will be easily influenced by the surrounding environment. Unlike Oliver Twist, he is just a perfect character in the novel. At the same, Dickens also has his weakness. He does not suggest the overthrow of the established order or any solutions to social problems. To some degree, Dickens still belonged to his age and showed some limits of petty bourgeois. He has criticized the vice of capitalist society from his point of view but failed to see how the oppressed should struggle with the oppressors. It is the weakness of Dickens. But in spite of the limits, Dickens is still a great writer of his age and he has a great contribution to the world literature.
