6.1 The Classification of ACs with Valuative Attitudes

According to Givon (1995), valuative attitudes include desirability, preference, intent, and soon. So ACs expressing these kinds of meanings will be divided int to ACs with valuative attitudes. According to Yuan Surong (2013), conditional ACs are based on the logical relationship between the context and the result of the context. Chinese-English ACs mostly indicate favorable conditions, depending on the condition. The adversative ACs express the opposite of what is said above and what is said below. Yuan Surong (2013) further distinguishes between negative, unexpected, and complementary transitions; the resultative ACs express the outcome after a certain process and are used at the beginning of the result clause. The assertive ACs are divided into explicit assertion, implicit assertion, and the final result of a process and are used at the beginning of the result clause. We will then analyze them using specific examples from Alcott’s works and Chinese translations.

7.1 Major Findings

Unique interpretations of adverbial conjunctions utilized for conveying the interpersonal meanings within a text can lead to significantly different representations and understandings of the novel’s elements, such as characters, plots, and societies. These differences can deeply affect the readers’ emotions, beliefs, judgments, and attitudes. This study compares adverbial conjunctions in Alcott’s works and their Chinese translations, aiming to examine the similarities and differences in expressing interpersonal meanings. Notable findings have been revealed through examples taken from dialogues in Alcott’s primary works and their Chinese translations, including Little Women, Little Men, and Jo’s Boys, 《小妇人》, 《小绅士》, and 《乔的男孩们》.
