Conclusion
This chapter summarizes the main points of the study and gives implications to writing teaching and learning of college students. Otherwise, limitations of this study and suggestions for future study are also provided. From the results of chapter four, teaching metadiscourse knowledge for college students in English writing is a good way to improve their compositions’ scores. After a term’s study, writing grades of students in EG were m ore higher. Students have learned to construct the text by relying on readers’ knowledge and abilities and m ade their compositions more credible and convincing. Metadiscourse offers a way of understanding the interpersonal resources and writers can conduct interpersonal negotiations to readers. In this study , Hyland’s interpersonal model of metadiscourse were taught to students. Students have learned interactive and inte ractional dimensions and their functions. In their ar guments, students used m ore transitions and fr ame markers for the whole com position’s structure clearly. Engagement markers were als o increased because they helped to establish a close relationship with readers. And they used less endophoric markers and evidentials which were used in academ ic researches. Hed ges and boosters were decreased little, the reason was that students could not expr ess their certainty in what they say and could not judge the truth of the ideas, and they have not grasp the usage s of them. Code glosses, attitude markers and self mentions were not changed so much. And students have known how to use metadiscourse markers in different genre. Students in experim ent group used m ostly metadiscourse markers into their compositions in a correctly way . And students could use proper metadiscourse markers to m ake their com positions more coherent. But there were still some metadiscourse markers were not grasped by students correctly, and they just used more metadiscourse markers into thei r compositions. And some usages of metadiscourse markers have not acquired by them. These students have not grasp the metadiscourse knowledge completely because their English learning ability were not so good and the period of the experiment was not long enough.
