摘要:本文是英语语言学论文,本文首先介绍了关于元话语的研究背景,接着介绍了比较著名的关于元话语的研究理论。本文以 Hyland 的研究作为重点和参考依据。同时,本文也介绍了一些中外关于元话语对于教学的实证研究。

Chapter 1  Int roduction

1.1 Background of the Study 
English is a basic skill in current society. For college students, they need to pass CET4 and CET6 in university. Writing is one of the most important skills in English learning and all English tests  cover writing test, so  more and more teachers focus on how to improve students’ writing skill. Writing is a behavior of expressing meanings and attitude, and writers shoul d consider readers’ ability of understanding and social influence  in the process of  writing.  Metadiscourse, as  a  way to  help  writers  build coherent discourse and provide convenient communication between readers, becomes more and more important in writing. Crismore (1989) has shown that metadiscourse is so distinct that it has been used in disc ourse for a long tim e. And many researchers discussed metadiscourse from different perspectives, such as pragm atic, rhetoric and function and so on. In recent years, dom estic researchers and language teachers have also conducted studies about m etadiscourse and its application. So the importance of metadiscourse  has been  gradually rec ognized  in language teach ing.  Hyland (2005 ) believed that metadiscourse can help English speakers and writers convey their ideas and  build a great relationship  to  their  listeners  and reader s  effectively  and is also important in academic writing.

1.2 Significance of the Study
This  research  aims  to  study  the  effect  of m etadiscourse  on Chinese college students’ English compositions. An experiment is carried out in two classes of one  university  in Liaoning Provi nce,  and they are both stud ents  major  in pre-school education. And this research aim s to test whether teaching metadiscourse knowledge and  developing students’  awareness of m etadiscourse  for one term  could im prove students’ writing proficiency. This  research  has  both  theoretical  and  practical  significance.  For  theoretical significance, first, this study  further proves the theory of  metadiscourse in terms of teaching  principle. Second, this study provi des  data of college students’  writing grades  before  and after teach ing  the  metadiscourse,  which  can show the ef fect  of metadiscourse for English writing. Third, th e number and the kind of m etadiscourse markers in students’ compositions are also introduced, which can give exam ples to further analyze the role of dif ferent metadiscourse markers to English com positions. As for practical significance, this study pr ovides an effective way to improve college students’  writing proficiency by  teaching  metadiscourse  to develop studen ts’ metadiscourse  awareness,  and then also  guides  teachers to cons truct  a new way in English writing teaching.
