摘要:The study of language aptitude in second language acquisition has quite a lot.Language aptitude is widely considered as a facilitator for language learning. Since the invention of ModernLanguage Aptitude Test, this field has caught a lot attention at home and abroad.

Chapter OneINTRODUCTION


1.1 Research Background
Language communication is closely related to human life. Especially today, for thesake of national development and international cooperation, English communicationplays a more and more important role in the society. The cultivation of listening andspeaking abilities are stressed to be placed in priority. Good oral English master, is onhigh demand. At the same time, education field has witnessed a booming enrollment inChinese university. Though English professional has become a yellow card in jobhunting, many high institutes still increase enrollment of English major.However, the phenomenon of high input and low output has not been changed.“Dumb English” situation still widely exists among English majors even if studentshave achieved high scores in TEM 4 or 8. Spoken English, a very important tool incommunication, has attracted a lot of attention. Researchers have attempted differentmethods to improve this situation. Some studies have been conducted on improvementof different teaching methods, from traditional form-focused teaching to communicativeteaching method. The concept of language proposed by behaviorism was rejected,which saw language as a process of response to stimulus. Meanwhile functionalism waswelcomed which stressed the meaning convention and oral interaction.

1.2 Rationale for the Present Study
The study of language aptitude in second language acquisition has quite a lot.Language aptitude is widely considered as a facilitator for language learning (Skehan,2002; Carroll, 1990; Bialystok & Frohlich, 1978). Since the invention of ModernLanguage Aptitude Test, this field has caught a lot attention at home and abroad.On the one hand, Both Skehan and Bialystok point out that language aptitude isone of the best tools predicting second language learning success. Lots of scholars havefound that language aptitude is facilitative to language acquisition. Carroll holds that itis different from language proficiency, and it is stable, hard to be changed (Carroll,1981). The Modern Language Aptitude Test designed by Carroll was once used by U.S.foreign affairs agency to select people accepting English training program. And the testis still the most powerful predicting tool nowadays (Skehan, 2002).On the other hand, although the conclusion has been reached on the importance oflanguage aptitude on second language acquisition in the academic, yet at home, scholarsin foreign education do not pay enough attention to the study on it. In China, since 1988,in the College Entrance Examination, language aptitude test was cancelled for theenrollment of English major. The phenomenon of “dumb English” in public English isattributed to the absence of training. There is little research on the influencingmechanism of language aptitude on various productive language skills.

2.1 L2 Oral Fluency
There are many views about oral English fluency of L2 learners. “Accuracy orfluency” has become a heated topic in the past few years. Fluency is usually describedas a label of communicative ability. With the development of science and technology,oral English ability began to catch people’s attention.
