Chapter Six Concluding Remarks
The General High School English Curriculum Standard is a breakthrough to the traditional education. It changes the single and boring teaching way in the traditional teaching into a new and lively teaching way with students as the main body. Moreover, it transforms the original silent class into an active atmosphere of the class to promote the interaction and communication between teachers and students. The New Curriculum Standard also focuses on fostering students’ comprehensive quality while cultivating students’ learning ability.
The author carried out the experimental teaching for students in two classes in the first semester of Senior 1 according to the teaching guidance model of autonomous learning (one of which was a control class, and the traditional teaching mode—examination-oriented education was implemented). In this teaching experiment, the teacher acted as the guider for the implementation of the new educational method and teaching mode, and tried to create a good atmosphere of autonomous learning for the students. Before carrying out the teaching mode of autonomous learning for students, a basic survey (questionnaire) was carried out, and it was found that the students didn’t have a complete learning strategy before entering high school; many students’ initiative and enthusiasm were not strong; they were accustomed to relying on the supervision and inspection of teachers. After the implementation of the teaching guidance model of autonomous learning, students’ learning autonomy and enthusiasm had been increased; they were no longer completely dependent on the teacher’s supervision; they could actively complete the learning tasks; their planning and purpose of learning were enhanced; they could preview the content of the new unit and use the reference book to solve the problem before the teacher started the class. When the teacher explained the new knowledge, students could put forward their own opinions or questions and connect the previous knowledge with new knowledge to make a summary.
