Chapter One Construction of Identity

With the development of globalization, people are increasingly concerned about the issueof identity. Hence the postcolonialism of Homi K. Bhabha is very important. One of itsfocuses is about the identity. In English, the basic meaning of identity is homogeneity andconsistency, a characteristic that is different from other things. And this kind of object iscalled a single entity. When it comes to human being, identity means something unique thatmakes oneself be himself or herself. Humans live in a culture by which they obtain acomprehension toward this world itself. So human beings establish their self-identity andlocate themselves through culture. Therefore identity especially cultural identity is veryimportant for a person and a nation. And the identity of one person is never fixed, instead, it isdynamic and fluid especially in a situation of diverse cultures. Therefore the reconstruction ofidentity is inevitable. Nicholas Jose’s two novels Avenue of Eternal Peace and The RedThread are both cross-cultural type and the characters in them also inevitably experience theiridentity’s reconstruction.

A. Chinese Characters
These two novels are Chinese-theme, so this thesis firstly focuses on the construction ofidentity of Chinese characters.In the novel Avenue of Eternal Peace, the most important Chinese character—the heroineJin Juan is a typical Chinese woman of that time. She is learned and talented but frustrated.Because of her humble background, she can only find a job in a middle school. But thingschange when she meets Wally—this Australian specialist who brings her a totally new worldand plays an important role in constructing her new identity. In her career, Wally helps her alot. She is excellent in English but can not find a good job as a translator in Peking UnionMedical College. It is mainly because her grandfather is Xu Qianlong, and Director Kangtakes advantage of Xu’s academic achievements to earn fame and money. So Jin Juan has nohope to step into this hospital. And though she knows the fact of Kang’s immoral conduct, she doesn’t want to make it a fuss just like her grandfather. She would rather hide this into herinner heart. But Wally doesn’t think so. He insists in using this secret to force Director Kangto give Jin Juan a decent job. It seems that Wally—this Australian man is much braver andmore decisive than Jin Juan. Wally awakes her from the dross side of Chinese culture,encourages her to fight with unequal force. Wally helps her reconstruct her identity in hercareer and helps her realize her value fully and this owes to her communication actively withWally who has a different culture from her.
