estigated  by  reevaluating  the  similarities  and differences  of  the  long  passive  and  the  short  passive  on  their  syntactic  structures. Then  we  will  argue  that  analyzing  the  two  with  a  uniform  approach  is  totally feasible, because both constructions involve A-movement.  To answer question (7b), firstly, we will establish that bei should be analyzed as a  functional  category,  namely  Voice,  heading  a  Voice P  immediately  above  v P; secondly, a transitivity head in the work of Bowers (2002) is postulated between v P and VP to account for the fact that only transitive verb can be selected by bei; lastly, we  argue  that  in  the  bei  construction  with  a  retained  object,  another  functional category, namely Applicative Head defined by Pylkk?nen (2008), is responsible for introducing  a  non-core  argument  and  the  Appl  head  can  assign  case  to  the retained object.

CHAPTER TWO   LITERATURE REVIEW 

This  chapter  deals  with  the  existing  literature  on  the  bei  construction.  Specifically, this  chapter  is  divided  into  three  sections.  In  section  2.1,  I  will  point  out  the limitations of previous studies on the syntactic status of bei and their corresponding derivational  approaches.  Section  2.2  reviews  two  different  approaches  to  treat  the long  passive  and  the  short  passive  and  I  will  provide  new  language  data  to demonstrate  that  it  is  unnecessary  to  treat  the  two  differently,  because  they  share almost  the  same  syntactic  properties.  Section  2.3  provides  a  summary  of  this chapter.  

2.1   Previous studies on the syntactic status of bei  
This  section  focuses  on  the  existing  literature  on  the  mysterious  syntactic  status  of bei.  We  will  discuss  the  possible  failure  of  each  approach  and  at  the  end  of  this section, we will propose that the best option up to now is to analyze bei as a passive marker, namely Voice. Bei  used  to  be  analyzed  as  a  preposition  to  introduce  an  Agent,  similar  to  the function of by in English passives (Travis 1984; Koopman 1984).
