Chapter 5 Cognitive Analyses of Genericswith Conceptual Metonymy


5.1 Introduction
Based on the above analyses and the research of other scholars of this field, it can beconcluded that English generics and generics in general are widely used in our daily life,encyclopedic readings and the text book writings, function as part of people’s knowledgeabout the world. Among them, there is a special type of generics, demonstrating aremarkable feature of “exception-toleration”, that is, although they are widely accepted,through logical reasoning process, they seem contradictory to common sense. Forexample, when we hear “Birds fly”, we are ready to ignore the fact that an ostrich cannotfly, and still believe that the judgment is true. This kind of generics, as mentioned in 2.1,is I-generics or characteristic generics, express the attributes of the member of the classbut not the specific individual or the class itself. Due to the widely use and the uniquefeature, this kind of generics arouse great interests among the scholars home and abroad,which has been analyzed in chapter 2, whereas, researches on the this languagephenomenon from other perspectives, especially the logical semantics, are not thoroughlyenough. Some scholars also try to explain it from the perspective of cognitive linguistics,which opens a door for the research on it. In this part, the cognitive mechanism ofproducing and understanding of the exception-toleration generics will be discussed fromthe perspective of conceptual metonymy of cognitive linguistics.

Conclusion


Generics, used to generize properties, regularities and characteristics of a class orthe whole member of the class instead of specific individuals, are widely used in dailycommunications, encyclopedic readings and also in the passages or texts. The remarkablecharacteristic of generics is exception-toleration and this language phenomenon arousesgreat interests among scholars home and abroad in different fields since 1970s, whichprovide us with a solid theory background to refer to. However, those studies mainlyfocus on the truth value judgment and the form semantic discussion. Till recent years,generics are studied from the perspective of cognitive linguistics. This thesis also belongsto this field, whereas, different from other scholars, this study is based on the largeamount of language facts collected from the text books of college English course andprevious related literature works. After the analyses of the collected data, it is concludedthat English generics are widely distributed in the prescribed texts and the frequencies ofeach kind of generics appear in each kind of text are different. Most of the law-likegenerics appear in expository and fragmentary texts while in narrative texts, they arerelatively less.
