Chapter 5 The Influence of Chinese Thinking Patterns on China English

Kachu states that once English was adopted in an area，whether the purpose is forscience, technology and literature or for the gain of reputation, status and modernization, itwill undergo a process of regeneration partly from language and partly from culture, inother world，it is the localization of language and culture (Sun, 1989). In 1966 R deSaussure also suggested that the spirit of a nation or nation group would continuously leada language to some certain roads. The "spirit" refers to the characteristic shown in cultureand thought. It also reveals the influence of culture and thought on language. If one hasacquired Chinese and formed the Chinese thinking patterns，it is impossible for him toavoid the Chinese features in his spoken or written English. Ye Junjian, a famous Chinesetranslator once said, “I am a Chinese and I cannot be free from Chinese thinking whenusing English" (Xie, 1995). So it is of significance to study the relationship between ChinaEnglish and Chinese thinking patterns. The following part will discuss the influence ofChinese thinking patterns on the lexical, syntactic and discourse level of China English. Itcan help to better understand China English and prove the objective existence of ChinaEnglish.

Conclusion

English as an international communication tool is no more being restricted toparticular country or nation but as a neutral information medium. Wang Rongpei has saidBritish English and American English are not considered as the only two Standard Englishlanguages but just as the two varieties of English. It reflects the influence of thinkingpattern on the language under different environments. "Once English is adopted in an area,be its purpose for science, technology, literature or for people's reputation, status andmodernization, it will undergo a regeneration process, partly from language and partlyfrom culture." (Sun, 1989).As is displayed above, language and culture, language and thought affect and interacteach other. Language is the carrier of thought and the thinking pattern influences the formof linguistic expression. In addition, the relationship between language and culture isdualistic. Language and culture may be inevitably tied together but no one language isinevitably tied to any one culture. It can only be combined with another culture. In otherwords, it is possible to use language A to bear culture B. As an international language,English can be combined with any particular culture not only with English culture.
