摘要:The present study is to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the two sets of EFLlistening textbooks used by English majors in China based on a new listeningtextbook evaluation framework for English majors constructed by the author. To bespecific, this study tries to investigate whether the English majors are satisfied withthe currently in-use listening textbooks and whether the two sets of listeningtextbooks can meet students' needs.

Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Research background
Thanks to the development of world economic globalization and increasinglyfrequent exchange among people among different countries and cultures, listening andspeaking play a significant role in communication and are especially important toEnglish majors because many of them will engage in English-related jobs aftergraduation, namely, foreign trade, Education, diplomacy, media, etc. Moreover, thecultivation of students' capacity for actual language use has been the central goal oflanguage teaching. Effective training in listening,a vital part of language skills, lays asolid foundation for language learning. The recent years, hence, have witnessed theprosperity of EFL listening researches in China.Xu and Xiao (2001) point out that in China, lack of the context for Englishlearning indicates that teaching materials are the main sources of language input.Listening textbooks are thus the core of the listening courses and particularlyimportant for classroom instruction and cultivation of students' listening skill. Since alarge amount of listening textbooks emerge into the market especially after therevision of English Curriculum Requirements for English Majors in 2000, there is anurgent need to evaluate these textbooks to promote listening teaching and learning.

1.2 Purpose and justification of the study
The present study is to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the two sets of EFLlistening textbooks used by English majors in China based on a new listeningtextbook evaluation framework for English majors constructed by the author. To bespecific, this study tries to investigate whether the English majors are satisfied withthe currently in-use listening textbooks and whether the two sets of listeningtextbooks can meet students' needs.Compared with its prosperity abroad, materials evaluation at home started late,which leads to the disjunction between the existing theories and the actual needs forevaluation. It means that studies on textbook compilation and evaluation have notbeen widely conducted in China,and that there is less researches into listeningtextbooks. Faced with the flourishing publication of listening textbooks for Englishmajors, we need to investigate whether these textbooks can really meet students'needs. Furthermore, this study is not only an evaluation of listening textbooks but alsoa construction of a listening textbook evaluation framework for English majors, whichis expected to enrich the theories of materials evaluation.The present study is of significance because a listening textbook evaluationframework is constructed based on the materials evaluation checklists and criteriaproposed by researchers and experts with a few slight modifications to make itsuitable for the Chinese context of listening learning of English majors. It is hopedthat this study will inspire the textbook compilers to some extent to realize thestrengths and weaknesses of the two sets of listening textbooks and will provide somesuggestions for listening textbooks revision and compilation. Besides, this study isexpected to give advice for teachers to make better use of the two sets of listeningtextbooks.
