2.1 Definition of English Neologism
Neologisms are especially useful in describing new inventions, new phenomena,or old ideas which have occurred in a new cultural background. New words are beingformed all the time. Generally speaking, English neologisms appeared because of therapid development of science and technology.As for the definition of English Neologism, different researchers have differentideas. The word “neologism,，originates from Greek language. “，Neo,，refers to “new”，while “logos，，refers to “word”，so “neologism” means “new word”. It seems simpleto understand the notion of neologism, but it is not easy to give a scientific definitionof neologism. What kind of words can be classified into the category of neologism?Whether the acceptance and distribution of neologism should be considered? If anexisting word acquires a new meaning, can we still call it a neologism? These arequestions we have to face up with when defining the meaning of neologism.In order to acquire a scientific definition of neologism, the researcher hasconsulted dictionaries and books for reference.In Oxford Advanced Learner's English-Chinese Dictionary(2000), neologism isdefined as follows: A new word is any word, phrase or sense that came into popularuse and enjoyed a vogue in the given period.Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English(1993) holds that a new word ofexpression, or a new meaning for an older word can be called a neologism.
