sons that college students in Tianjin University ofTechnology were not high in English pragmatic competence is that they tend to beover polite during communication. The result of the questionnaire and role play in theinvestigation finds that the participants tend to realize the act of refusal by offeringexplanations and apologies, which supports the performance of students in role play.Nearly all students involved in refusals uses apology and explanations. Few studentsoffered an alternative. The reason behind it is that most students think they should bepolite during communication and should not threaten their partner’s face or shouldrespect other’s esteem in refusal so that not to make others feel embarrassed oruncomfortable. But most of them tend to be over polite. Here are the original wordsfrom the participants who have been interviewed by Wechat. “I think I should bepolite in this occasion”(E-1-11)②“Hmm…I just simply apply what I have learnedinto the actual use. Although foreigners care equality a lot personally I think it ispolite to provide some explanations to teacher or it would be rude”(E-2-97)③“For me,I pay much attention to the cultural difference so in daily communication I tend tothink about whether I am polite or not.”(E-2-96)④(translated from their Chineseversion to English version)

Conclusion
According to the former researches and data collected form questionnaire, roleplay and interview, there are many findings that need to mention in this chapter.Based on the data collected in a questionnaire and analyzed by SPSS 13.0 thatthe pragmatic competence in college students is not high, indicating the educationalignorance of the actual use of English in real life. Most students failed to use Englishappropriately, especially in the context of addressing. Further study on the reason whythey didn’t aware the difference of addressing in China and English-speakingcountries it shows that in the interview, most students confessed that they were taughtsince they were in primary school. And before the class, they were asked to start classby greeting teacher “Good morning, teacher” and their teacher would reply them back“good morning, class”. Also, in China, students are supposed to greet teachers by callthem ‘teacher’ to show student’s gratitude and respect.. The data in the role play collected shows that most students were able to handlesome situations despite some s mall mistakes in the communication. First of all, theycan at least express themselves clearly and their partner can understand their meaning. But at the same time, some of them still didn’t know how to do use Englishappropriately especially in requests. Although they can understand each other, most ofthem tend to make small mistakes like wrong vocabulary, uncompleted sentences. And in the role play they can use their facial expressions to make up their inadequatelinguistic competence, which is a good strategy actually.
