摘要:It has a special educational function to apply conceptual metonymy to college Englishreading teaching. It can help students understand and grasp the basic cognitive mechanism ofvocabulary evolution by using metonymic thinking, thus promotes the understanding ofvocabulary and effective application of vocabulary.

Chapter I Introduction


1.1 Background of the study
With the rapid development of economy and technology, English is becoming more and more important. It requires people to master and use English in order to better carry out international exchanges. National Medium and Long-term Educational Reform and Development Plan puts forward that “lots of internationalized talents are needed who have international perspectives, know the international rules and can participate in international affairs and competition”.[1]According to College English Curriculum Requirements by the Ministry of Education, “college English teaching is guided by foreign language teachingtheory, the contents of college English teaching include language knowledge, skills of application to language, abilities of cross-cultural communication and learning strategies, itsultimate goal is to train the capabilities of integrated application, increase cultural awarenessand adapt to our social development and international communication needs”.[2]So the levelof English reading comprehension is an important index when evaluating student’s languagelevel. Improving the reading ability is the key to improve the abilities of listening, speaking,writing and translation. So reading plays an important role in English teaching and learning.What’s more, in all kinds of English tests, reading comprehension has taken a large proportion,especially CET 4 and CET 6. However, students just remain in the understanding of the literalmeaning or one-side understanding to the reading materials in the reading process, and theycould not grasp the implied meaning of a text very well, understand the overall content, andthus better understand the authors’ real feelings. Students lack the ability to take an active partin reading and make use of their imagination to initiate creative thinking. One of the reasonsis that students lack the ability of metonymic thinking, just partly understand the literalmeaning of article and have no awareness of the metonymy.

随着经济和科技的飞速发展,英语变得越来越重要。它要求人们掌握和使用英语,为了更好地开展国际交流。国家中长期和长期教育改革和发展规划纲要提出,“需要大量的国际化人才,谁拥有国际视野,了解国际规则,能够参与国际事务和竞争”。[1]


The study of modern cognitive linguistic shows that metonymy is a kind of commoncognitive style and expressive style in people’s daily life. It is a cognitive process in which one conceptual entity that is prominent, important, easy to perceive, easy to remember andeasy to identify provides mental access to another conceptual entity. It provides theinformation channels for people to output and understand the language, so it is an importantway to connect the linguistic information and nonverbal information.

研究现代认知语言学表明,转喻是一种共同的认知风格和表现风格,在人们的日常生活中。这是一个认知的过程中,一个是突出的,重要的是,容易察觉,易记,易于识别的概念实体提供精神进入到另一个概念实体。它提供的信息通道输出和理解语言的人,所以这是一个重要的方式连接的语言信息和非语言信息。


1.2 Purpose of the study
