Chapter Four Explorations on the Compilation of EDJSSL

4.1 General introduction of the compilation of EDJSSL
To compile an EDJSSL, the principles to assure its design features should be set up.The general principles specify the nature of the EDJSSL since they contain the designfeatures which should be in agreement with the needs, strategies, skills and expectationsof the potential users.Principle 1: The EDJSSL should be need-oriented.The proposed EDJSSL should meet the needs of the Chinese junior EFL learners intheir use of the dictionary. Exactly, the EDJSSL should help them solve the problems ina language activity, help them cultivate their interests to English and help them becomeconfident in learning English. It should become a use fill tool that can enhance Englishlearning, taking into account the actual situations of EFL learning in real Englishcontext. To be a good learning tool, the EDJSSL should provide necessary and adequateinformation which can be accessed easily by the learners. At the same time, it shouldalso help internalize lexical knowledge.

Conclusion

The main findings of the present study can be summarized as below:
1) Based on the research of the dictionary typology, EDJSSL can be defined as ageneral, bilingual，linguistic or encyclopedic learner's dictionary for production,corpus-based for Chinese junior secondary school learners. In other words, generallyspeaking, it is a mixed type of learner's dictionary containing a variety of informationwhich is presented in a variety of ways.
2) Comparative analysis among the three widely used essential English learner'sdictionaries is given in terms of the purposes, features and entry information. Guidingprinciples for compiling EDJSSL are put forward. The proposed EDJSSL should meetthe needs of the Chinese junior EFL learners in their use of the dictionary; generally, itshould be need-oriented and productive-oriented.
3) The word list with high frequency will be included based on the corpus forEDJSSL; the defining vocabulary of EDJSSL will be controlled among 1.500 words,every word used in a definition should be defined, the word definition of the wholesentence paraphrase and skeleton paraphrase will be adopted, the advantages ofadopting the whole sentence paraphrase method are the definition themselves, whichreflect the grammatical characteristics of the defined word.
