摘要:To make thedictionary meet the needs for Chinese junior secondary school learners, studies are stillneeded for finding out an appropriate model for designing a suitable dictionary forthem.
2.1 General introduction of dictionary
As for dictionary-compiling,the first point to be considered is about the type of thedictionary, which is named “dictionary typology". Dictionary typology is one of thetopics of theoretical lexicography and has been studied by a number of scholars fromdifferent perspectives (e.g. Yong Heming,2003: 55-79,from a communicativeperspective; Wang Fufang, 2004: 6-7,Zhao Yanchun, 2003: 92,from a cognitiveperspective). Dictionaries can be classified in different ways on the basis of differentcriteria. To determine the type of EDJSSL, a learner's or pedagogical dictionary,Hartmann's typology of pedagogical dictionaries is introduced.According to Hartmann (2001: 175), a pedagogical dictionary is a dictionary‘‘designed for the practical reference needs and skills of (language) learners", a learner'sdictionary is “a pedagogical dictionary aimed specially at non-native language learners”.Hartmann (2001: 74-79),made a detailed study on different types of pedagogical orlearner's dictionaries based on different criteria under the following topics: Within the above typology, EDJSSL can be a general, bilingual, linguistic orencyclopedic learner's dictionary for production, corpus-based for Chinese juniorsecondary school learners. In other words,generally speaking, it is a mixed type oflearner's dictionary containing a variety of information which is presented in a varietyof ways. These design features of EDJSSL will be integrated into the guiding principlesand explorations on the compilation of EDJSSL.

2.1.2 Dictionary structure
Dictionary structure,"the overall design and component of a dictionary” (Hartmann,2001: 173),can be divided into megastructure, microstructure,cross-reference structure.While the latter three are somehow more abstract structures, the first two are moreconcrete components parts of a dictionary, as illustrated as Figure 2.1.
According to Hartmann (2001: 175),the inacrostructure is depicted as a sequenceof entries (from 1 to w), preceded, interrupted and followed by the outside matter andthe back matter. The microstructure (e.g. of Entry 1) consists of the headword and twosubsidiary parts,the left-core ‘formal,comment (spelling, grammar, pronunciation) andright-core ‘semantic,comment (definition, etymology, usage).
