5.1 Major Findings
In this research, in order to know the situation of English graded reading in foreign language middle schools in Shanghai, research methods like questionnaires and interview are used for the purpose of exploring the effects of English graded reading carried out by school, the changes in students’ reading ability, and the difficulties that students are confronted with. After analyzing the collected data and information, the major findings are listed as follows.
Firstly, the foreign language middle school selected for this study accords utmost priority to cultivating the students’ reading ability by carrying out graded reading, and provides sufficient, comprehensible and high-quality reading resources for the students at different reading levels. The designed teaching methods have effectively helped students improve their reading ability. Meanwhile, teachers are full of enthusiasm for teaching English reading, and they are ready to help their students to cope with the problems they meet with during the reading process. However, the students’ comments on the assessment program set by the school are mixed. Although the students admit that the assessment can help them improve reading efficiency, it cannot improve their reading interest to a certain extent.
Secondly, English graded reading has greatly improved students’ reading ability and reading character, and has helped students gain a clear understanding of the importance of English graded reading. English graded reading can not only broaden students’ international horizons, but also improve students’ overall English proficiency significantly in terms of reading speed, vocabulary, reading comprehension, etc. English graded reading is also a very effective means to increase students’ interest in English.
Thirdly, through investigating students’ reading habits, conclusion can be made that students are generally introverted and tend to do it alone when doing English graded reading. They are not reluctant to share reading materials and reading experience with each other.
