Managing Diversity Postgraduate Workshop
Course Outline 2009
OVERVIEW
It is often stated that organisations are becoming ‘more diverse’, and 留学生用英语that ‘managing diversity’ has become a necessary managerial skill. Indeed, one of the key aspects of the approach to ‘managing diversity’ (compared to ‘equal opportunities’ practices) is that it is seen to be an integral part of any manager’s role, not simply confined to human resource experts.
In this option module we will examine some different understandings of what is meant by ‘diversity’. We will also consider a longer view on the different experiences of different groups in organisations and how differences become defined and treated within organisational life. The course explores the approaches taken by governments and organisations to try to ensure that people do not suffer from unfair discrimination because of their differences – real or perceived. We will also look at some specific areas of management practice, and how these can be approached in relation to managing diversity.
The course is run by Dr Karen Dale, k.dale@le.ac.uk, room KEB 529D
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1. Students should be able to discuss the processes of prejudice, discrimination and exclusion at the levels of the individual, group, organisation and society.
2. Students should be able to define and debate different meanings and approaches to equality and diversity.
3. Students should be able to describe how these approaches are translated into policy and procedure, and to demonstrate the strengths and weaknesses of these organisational activities.
COURSE PROGRAMME
(Please see UPDATED timetable for rooms, as these change for each session and DURING the sessions!)
Session 1: Monday 16th March 14.00 – 18.00
Diversity is about differences.
Why do differences matter in organisations?
In this session we use different levels of analysis – individual, group, organisational and societal – to understand how differences between people and groups are treated in organisations. From this we should achieve a better understanding of what issues need to be addressed in ‘managing diversity’.
Relevant reading from Kirton and Greene textbook, pp. 7-10 on The Social Construction of Inequalities and The Social Construction of Identity; chapter 3 on Theorizing Labour Market Segmentation and Identity Issues
Session 2: Tuesday 17th March 14.00 – 18.00
What is ‘diversity’? Why do organisations want to manage it? Where did ‘managing diversity’ come from? How does it differ from ‘equal opportunities’?
In this session we examine the development of ‘managing diversity’ and its conceptual underpinning. This helps to draw out its strengths and weaknesses in relation to how it may be used within the organisation to combat inequalities and disadvantages, and to maximise employee potential and enhance business goals.
Relevant reading from Kirton and Greene: ch 4 on Diversity, Equality and Discrimination in Organisations and 5 on Theorizing Equality and Diversity Approaches
Session 3: Thursday 19th March 10.00 – 14.00
What are the contexts within which diversity is managed? These include legal, economic, labour market, human resource management practice and organisational/societal cultures. These contexts help to shape what is feasible and accepted diversity managemen本论文由英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写,英语论文代写,代写论文,代写英语论文,代写留学生论文,代写英文论文,留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
