Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
As far as the ways to measure entities are concerned, the languages in the world can be divided into two categories: the classifier language and non- classifier language. And the Chinese is the latter, which boasts abundant classifiers. When it comes to the quantity of an entity, a proper classifier has to show up between a numeral and a noun representing that entity. For instance, when we want to say that there are three birds, we say “三只鸟”. By contrast, there is not an independent word class named as classifier in English. Instead, singularity and plurality undertake the task of measurement of things. Nevertheless, it doesn’t mean that classifiers are totally absent in English. “A piece of news”, “a slice of cake” and “a drop of water”…… can function as classifiers. Such classifier structures abound in English. Due to the indispensable roles English and Chinese classifiers play in our communication, many scholars at home and abroad conducted lots of studies about them from different perspectives. Emotion is almost involved in every aspects of our life. When we deal with good or bad situations bestowed by life, different emotions tend to be aroused. Researchers believe that emotions are central to the issues of human survival and adaptation. As for the classification of human emotions, John Broadus Watson, the famous American psychologist, divides the basic human emotions into three groups: fear, anger, and love. While in China, there are many ways of classification. In the Book of Rites, the basic human emotions include: happiness, anger, sadness, fear, love, hatred and regret. In Doctrine of The Mean, happiness, anger, sadness and joy are the four basic human emotions. All in all, according to the different ways of classification at home and abroad, among plenty of human emotions, there are four basic emotions: happiness, anger, sadness and fear, which generate other emotions by combining or interacting with each other (Mei Wenzhang, 2012). Many scholars conducted studies into emotions from the perspectives of all these subjects such as biology,
Psychology, Psychiatry,
Philosophy, anthropology, neurology, sociology. Since the words representing emotions are intangible and invisible, few studies were carried out from the perspective of the collocation of classifier and emotion nouns. General psychology divides human beings’ basic emotions into four groups: joy, anger, fear and sorrow because these emotions are related with the basic needs of human beings (Ye Yiqian, 1997). This paper attempts a comparison of the collocations of the classifiers with the emotion nouns describing the four basic human emotions—“anger”, “joy”, “sorrow” and “fear” between English and Chinese. And the reasons behind the similarities and differences between English and Chinese will be explored.
