Chapter 2 Literature Review

2.1 Definition

2.1.1 Narrative Approach

Narrative is born along with human history and coexists with human civilization.Narrative is everywhere.The existence of narrative is why people can understand and createlanguage.Toolan(1988)argues that everything we do can be seen as a narrative with abeginning,a process,and an end,with characters,setting,conflict,suspense,purpose,andallegory.Herman(2003)pointed out that people mainly organize their experiences andmemories in narrative forms such as stories,excuses,myths,and reasons for doing things.Narrative is a fundamental way of human survival and an essential way of language cognitiondevelopment.Ding(2008)believed that narrative refers to reconstructing and reconnectingmany events.Narrative connects many stories.Of course,these stories can be true or fictional.According to this interpretation,narrative is the narration of one or more real or fictionalevents.Xiong and Deng(2010)pointed out that narrative in the traditional sense refers to adiscourse pattern in which a specific sequence of events is embedded in a certainchronological order to obtain meaning.With the deepening of narratology research intovarious disciplines,the concept of narrative has been extended to the non-linguistic level andrefers to all human behaviors in general.

With the development of cognitive linguistics,narrative ability is also considered as auniversal cognitive ability.The narrative activity that people carry out daily is a cognitiveactivity.Of course,foreign language learning is also a cognitive activity in which narrativecan play a specific role.It is under this background that narrative approach comes into being.Xiong and Deng(2010)pointed out that the basic idea of narrative teaching is to use narrativeform as the medium,to serve the research results of cognitive science and narrative theory in foreign language teaching,and to cultivate the cognitive ability of foreign language learners.They also point out that narrative approach has three main forms in practical teaching:adapting materials,setting situations and arranging tasks.

2.2 Related Studies on English Reading Teaching

Reading is the most essential way for people to acquire knowledge.Learning a languagedepends mainly on reading to increase the knowledge reserve.Nowadays,teachers andstudents pay more and more attention to reading,which plays an increasingly important rolein English teaching.Experts and scholars at home and abroad have also conducted extensiveand in-depth studies on English reading teaching from many perspectives.

The first is about studies on the importance of reading.Carrell(1988)believes that incountries where the mother tongue is not English,the most important thing for students tolearn English,that is,to learn a second language,is to read relevant materials of the languagethey have learned.Only through reading can they master all kinds of information they need.Eskey(1970)believed that in learning a foreign language,in addition to oral practice,it ismore important for students to read,and reading should be placed in the same importantposition as oral English.Both are very important.Wang(2023)believed that reading is notonly the behavior of human beings and their bodies,but also the way of existence of human beings and their bodies,which is interwoven with 论文英语论文网提供整理,提供论文代写英语论文代写代写论文代写英语论文代写留学生论文代写英文论文留学生论文代写相关核心关键词搜索。
