Chapter One Introduction
1.1 Research Background
As an important language skill,English reading ability is an important part ofEnglish language ability,reflecting students'thinking ability,synthesis ability,generalization ability,and judgment ability.And students'reading performance is animportant reflection of their reading ability.The improvement of reading ability laysthe foundation for the improvement of other language skills.Therefore,reading playsa critical role in English reading teaching.Reading teaching involves in-depthanalysis,exploration,and evaluation of texts and servers as a source of languagelearning for students as well as a vehicle for perceiving,internalizing,and usinglanguage,which is conducive to developing students'comprehensive language useskills.Besides,according to the National English Curriculum Standards for SeniorHigh Schools(2017),our English reading teaching should aim to cultivate students'English subject core competencies which include language ability,learning ability,thinking capacity,and cultural awareness.The process of education is closely linkedto the process of language learning and the comprehension of text,which inevitablyincludes a lot of reading activities.Therefore the teaching of reading is extremelyimportant for the development of students'English subject core competencies.This iswhy English reading teaching is so important(Wang,2017).
1.2 Research Purpose
In the face of the current problems and research situations existing in Englishreading teaching at senior high schools,the purposes of this study are as follows:
First and foremost,the study aims to explore the effect of English readingteaching based on register theory on students'reading performance and what aspectsof the effects of register theory-based English reading teaching on students'readingperformance.
Secondly,with the purpose of exploring the effects more specifically,the study isalso carried out to figure out the effects of English reading teaching based on registertheory on the reading performance of students at different levels.
To conclude,the study is designed to offer reasonable answers to the researchquestions,thus figuring out the effects of register theory-based English readingteaching on students’reading performance.Besides,the thesis provides someeffective and feasible suggestions and implications for English reading teaching insenior high school.
Chapter Two literature review
2.1 Register Theory
In this part,the literature review on register theory will be unfolded including itsdevelopment,the definition of register,three variables,its functions and themeta-function of language and the three variables.
2.1.1 Historical development
