The Influence of Work Extension on Work Balance
Introduction
There has been a long history in management and organization theory to regard space and time as significant resources. While in modern times, there is still a trend to expand the application of space and time in organizations. The tools of information and communication technology (ICT) have changed the ways in which people worked formerly in the workplace. The mobile phones, laptops, and other mobile devices which are provided to staff make it simple to work anywhere at any time, thereby affecting the boundaries of location and time of home and work (Tietze and Musson, 2002). And also Towers et al (2006) held that due to ICT, the performance of work is no longer limited to specific hours at a specific location, because the technology has facilitated the expansion of the temporal and spatial territories of office work. Hence, there seems a tendency of ICT to blur the temporal and spatial boundaries between organizational and everyday life. So the effective management of work/life balance (WLB) is increasingly recognized as an issue that matters the organizations and employees. Just as one coin has two sides, on one hand, the technologies facilitate the work, provide flexible time and space, and help improve the productivity; on the other hand, it causes the problem of balance between work and life. Because the easy access to the technology makes it possible for people to work anytime and the fact is that with flexible time and space they usually work outside the working time, in the evenings, vocations which should be family times. This essay is intended to discuss the influence of work extension on the work balance. It mainly focuses on two aspects: the influence on gender and family relationships and health and safety of employees. And then it discusses how government and organizations react to seek the solution for the problem of work-life balance.
