ention should be paid to music in practicing spoken English. We can make full use of these similarities to practice spoken English. We should notice the rhythmical beauty of spoken English and try to master the rhythm of spoken English by using English songs .Then this will bring twice the result with half the effort.
2.3 Close relationship between speaking and listening
In real communication, actually, both listening and speaking belong to oral activities. As listening and speaking are two direct activities and are the main forms in communication, they are closely related to each other. Listening is a process of receiving information, and the listener is trying to understand the information received; while speaking is a process of giving out information, and the speaker is expressing himself/herself by employing what he/she has stored in his/her mind. Listening and speaking both deal with acoustic signals. They depend on each other and promote each other. “According to Stephen Krashen, an American psycholinguist, ‘Language input comes before language output.” Listening is essentially a process of information input; it is a process of receiving and decoding; while speaking is a process of information output; it is a process of coding and transmitting. Therefore listening is the basis and premise of speaking. To improve speaking ability, it is, above al , necessary to improve listening ability . The ultimate purpose of improving listening is to improve speaking-- to enhance communication ability.’”[17]
In short, a large amount of aural input of language is good for effective oral output of language. Good spoken English needs lots of aural input of the English language. We have to try every means to receive as much effective language input as possible in order to improve spoken English.
3. Characteristics and Advantages of English Songs
English songs are full of rhythms and emotions. Change of the rhythm is obvious; as for vowels, they should be given full pronunciation, and they can be prolonged, while consonants are often pronounced with a short force; and some syllables are also lengthened.
There are quite many advantages of English songs, which will be considered and discussed in the following paragraphs.
3.1 English songs are enjoyable and attractive
English songs are enjoyable and attractive due to their affective power. They can create an atmosphere that makes the learner feel relaxed. Thus, the learner tends to be more willing to open his or her mouth to speak. He or she will not feel so anxious or shy to speak English as they are attracted by the interesting music. When the learner finds songs enjoyable, his or her interest that plays a key part in speaking English can be easily stimulated.
3.2 English songs are good for learning pronunciation and rhythm
Listening to and singing English songs as more as possible contributes much to learning accurate pronunciation, intonation and rhythm of spoken English. Real English songs---sung by foreign singers---always offer idiomatic pronunciation and good rhythm. From English songs, we can get lots of phonetic knowledge, such as, change of length of vowels, pauses plosives, lose of plosives, sound linking, weak-forms, assimilation, co-articulation, elision, stress, rhythm and so on and so forth. Fluent and clear spoken English needs these phonetic techniques because of their great importance in conveying meanings effectively. From the early folk songs
