as a path or a cue to evoke the precise information we are trying to retrieve.”[2] “Tim Murphey (1990) defines the ‘song-stuck-in-my-head’ phenomenon as a melodic Din, as an (in) voluntary musical and verbal rehearsal. Murphey also hypothesizes that the Din could be initiated by sub vocal rehearsal.”[3] “Music seems to leave a particularly deep trace in our memories: this could be dui to the fact that it is related to affective and unconscious factors. It could also be related to the hypo
thesis that it is less energy-demanding because musical perception starts before birth.”[4] And “according to Murphey’s analysis of fifty pop English songs selected from ‘Music &
Media ’ , as pop songs are easy, full of emotions, a little dialogues in life, they are good for memorizing something.”[5]
So, by strengthening English learners’ musical memory, the appropriate foreign sounds will be stored in their long-term memory, and thus be accessible for sub vocal rehearsal.
As we known, to memorize English words, expressions, and sentence patterns as well as possible is really not an easy thing. Now that music ha such positive effects as are mentioned above, we can make use of English songs to memorize and enlarge English vocabulary---with the company of music.
2.1.2 Importance of music intelligence
“Gardner (1983) pointed out in his ‘theory of Multiple Intelligences’ that ‘Human has seven basic intelligences, one of which is music intelligence.’ He believes that music intelligence is a kind of ability to feel the rhythm, melody of music. It refers to sensitivity to beat, pitch, strength, etc., and response to emotional meanings contained in music. Those who have better music intelligence usually have an intuitive and complete understanding of language. Researchers have found that development of music intelligence seems to have some kind of connection with the development of language skills. Whatever age and whichever kind of drawback in language, those whose music intelligence develops better show greater ability in distinguishing word sounds and master pronouncing skills better.”[6]
A study made by Pei Zhengwei(2003) shows that “there is a positive relation between music intelligence and students’ English listening ability and speaking ability.”[7]The result of her study tells that English learners should develop their music intelligence through various activities related to music in order to heighten their sense of rhythm and in turn to improve their spoken English.
Duan Ruiling (1997) ever mentioned that “students’ big attainment in music, or high music intelligence, has a positive influence on their pronunciation.”[8] Take famous singers for example, although they haven’t specially studied English, they are able to learn English songs quite well in a short time just by listening to and imitating the songs for several times. They can do so well because training in music that they have received helps them improve their listening ability and increase their sense of rhythm, which plays quite an important role in spoken English.
Music has a great positive effect on the development of English skills. “The higher one’s music intelligence is, the more sense of rhythm of spoken English he has. According to Fonseca Mora(2000) , music nature of language influences an English learner’s pronunciation and even the whole process of his English study . He suggests that a special way of learning English be adopted called ‘Melody Method’.”[9]
