2.1 Language learning strategy
The study of second language learning strategies began in 1970s and flourished in 80sand 90s. It began in 1980s in China and flourished in the late mid and late 90s. Learningstrategy has always been an important issue for educators, philosophers and psychologists.There is still no agreement on the definition of “language learning strategies”, and thedefinition of language learning strategies varies widely among different researchers.Stren (1983) defines language learning strategies as the general tendencies or learningtechniques can be observed in the form of learning behavior. Stern distinguishes betweenlearning strategies and learning skills.Chamot(1987) argues that learning strategies are the techniques, methods, orintentional actions used for students to promote learning, recall language and content areainformation.Rubin(1987) learning strategies are strategies that contribute to development oflanguage system which learner constructs affects learning effect directly. According to hissystem, he divided the system into two strategies namely, direct and indirect.Oxford (1989) language learning strategies are behaviors or actions which learnersuse to make language learning more successful, self-directed and enjoyable. She regardslanguage learning strategy as a kind of behavior. Students can use language learning moresuccessful, objective and enjoyable than before.

2.2 Listening strategy
English listening strategies are based on learning strategies. It is a kind of learningstrategy that refers to a learning process in hearing the thoughts and actions.Early listening teaching pays more attention to teachers' teaching emphasizing thechange of teachers' teaching behavior and improving their listening comprehension ability.This teaching method emphasizes teacher's language input changes, because it is not clearif students have been restricted in using listening strategy that have certain limitations toimprove students’ listening ability. In the 1960s, people began to realize that the mostimportant thing is to cultivate students to learn to listen.Listening learning strategies are the measures taken by language learners in order toeffectively carry out listening learning.(Huang, 2008:30-31)English listening strategies arebuilt on the basis of English learning strategies. Many scholars have classified it as abranch of learning strategies. Jane Wills (1981) believes that listening strategies mustcontain predicting what people will say, guessing the words or phrases you don’t know,understanding the problem with the existing knowledge, identifying relevant informationand irrelevant information, paying attention to the beginning of the paragraph word (forexample, OK, because, but etc…). Cohen (1998) believes that listening strategy is a kind of psychological or mental process when learners choose to complete the learning plan.In a word, I think listening strategy is a kind of learning strategy, which is developedand implemented according to their own characteristics to complete the task of listeningcomprehension.
