documentation must be included with your final dissertation in electronic ormat. The Examiners will typically try to run your software with different input data to your own to evaluate its robustness – you will be well advised to
do this yourself prior to submission. Where appropriate, you source code must compile without any errors or warnings. If it does not, it will be discarded.
6. Presentation and style
a. Notation
The choice of notation is very important and is the responsibility of the author of the dissertation. It is a matter of personal choice and it gives the dissertation a specific flavour. It has to be consistent: all chapters
and sections should use the same symbols for the same objects, unless there is a very good reason for a change, which should then be explained. The notation of the source papers does not have to be followed. Indeed this is hardly possible when several sources are used that employ different notation. It is advisable to follow some generally accepted conventions. It may be a good idea to maintain a separate file with a notation list, continuously updated. (It can then be added to the dissertation as a valuable appendix.)
b. Environments
Definitions, theorems, propositions, lemmas, proofs, examples,remarks and the like are crucial elements adding structure to the text. The author has to decide in advance on a personal style and apply it consistently. In particular, please pay attention to:
i. the font used for the name and contents of the environment;
ii. alignment (indented, hanging indent, wider margins?);
iii. vertical spacing before and after various items;
iv. numbering system; questions to answer are: Should it be separate for each environment? Should the chapter number be indicated? It is inevitable that the numbers will change as you work on your text, so it may be easier to keep separate numbers for each section, so Theorem 2.1.1 would be the first theorem in Section 1 of Chapter 2.
c. Definitions
Each mathematical and financial notion and symbol used in the text(like portfolio, return, martingale,
strategy, …) has to be defined before or immediately after it is used for the first time. Important notions and symbols may require a separate definition environment or a displayed formula. Less important or more obvious ones can be
defined in passing, within the body of the text.It may be a good idea if each important definition is followed (or
preceded) by examples and counter examples. For instance, a function that is not a random variable may be shown after the definition of a random variable.
d. Assertions (theorems, propositions, lemmas, …)
Please ensure that all the notions and notation used have been defined and that the reader has all the information needed to understand each statement. The assumptions and the claim have to be clearly distinguished. Important assertions need to make sense independently of the rest of the text (except for the need to refer to the definitions and
notation used).
e. Proofs
In an MSc dissertation these need to be given in great detail, every step double checked and made obvious to the reader. Do not necessarily follow the style of the proofs in the source materials. They are typically written with an expert reader in mind and are often sketchy.One of your goals is to fill in all gaps. Much better to err on the side of
giving too many details, than too few.
f. Introduction and background material
Best written at the end of your work. It is
