hould demonstrate the ability to locate, read and understand
literature in their field. Try to identify, study and reference relevant material, not only that on the list in your topic description, but beyond.Examiners will look for evidence of this work. The source papers quoted in the topic description are merely the first step.
f. Results from the source papers and any other texts should not be cited without full proof, except for basic facts covered in textbooks. Any results cited have to be carefully acknowledged. Your Advisor can help you to decide whether or not you can quote a result without proof.
g. Generally, the proofs of all claims and assertions other than standard textbook material need to be presented in great detail. These are often only sketched out in the source papers, where brevity is the norm. This
is not the case in a dissertation, where full details are expected. Careful explanation of each step and completing any gaps and omissions in the source material provides the Examiners with evidence that the student
has understood the subject matter. A close copy from source materials without much input from the student provides evidence to the contrary.
h. Students should aim to give their own examples and counter examples to illustrate the material. The importance of examples cannot be emphasised enough.
i. Any errors (except simple typing mistakes), false or dubious claims, assertions, sometimes also questionable definitions and the like spotted
in the source papers should be carefully indicated and discussed in the dissertation, supported by a clear argument, example and/or counter example. Students are often worried and bewildered when detecting errors or inaccuracies in source material, but indeed the opposite should be the case: it presents an excellent opportunity to demonstrate good understanding of the issues.
j. Errors spotted in sources may not always be easy or even possible to rectify, but if you are able to suggest a valid correction, it will add substantial value to the dissertation and may be an indication of distinction level achievement.
k. New results not covered in the source papers, substantially new proofs of known results, relevant and non-trivial new examples or counter examples, good case studies based on data obtained by the student, and
the like are all indicators of distinction level performance. Nevertheless, in an MSc dissertation distinction can also be achieved for high quality workmanship that does not necessarily extend beyond the scope of the source material.
l. The level of presentation should be aimed at a reader who has no prior knowledge of the material, but has sufficient mathematical background for a postgraduate student entering a Masters programme in mathematical finance. Assume an imaginary reader of this kind, rather than an expert in the field. Do not write for the Dissertation Advisor or the External Examiner. They are experts and can often guess what you mean even if your work is unclear, but they certainly will not be impressed by having to guess. Put yourself in the position of the
imaginary reader. Would you like to have to learn the material from the text you have written? Or would you rather read the source paper?
5. Computer code and software
All computer code and software (for example, Excel spreadsheets, Visual Basic, C++ code) developed as part of your dissertation should be fully tested and comprehensively documented. All source code, compiled code a
