1.2.1 Current Education Situation
Modern teaching theory has established the student’s dominant position in teaching. Also it affirms that students have a proactive subject consciousness and cognitive structure in learning activities, and have the function of self-regulation by absorbing external information actively.
In recent years, due to the enrollment expansion of most colleges, the foreign language teachers are relatively insufficient and English classroom teaching hours are limited, so it is impossible to teach students life-long knowledge. Therefore, it is a new requirement for teaching in modern society to cultivate students’ autonomous learning ability and teach them how to learn. Firstly, language educators should first make it clear that language learning and teaching are momentous in the whole process of education; secondly, language learning and teaching help students develop their autonomous learning ability. Learners can solve problems together with other members of the group and reach a series of behaviors responsible for learning, such as two-way solutions, which will inevitably improve the ability of autonomous learning. At the same time, this is also the need for continuing education in the future. The traditional education focusing on knowledge and skills indoctrination can’t meet the requirements of the development of the times. As a consequence, modern education, especially for English learning, must develop the autonomous learning ability of learners which is essential for students’ lifelong learning.
