Conclusion
Above all, under the premised of the available quality of diversity, authenticity andflexibility in teaching, teachers should bring in the method of genre analysis in thesiswriting class, in order to have students familiar with and master the discourse structure andschematic structure of different genre; Besides, the introduction of English and Chinesediscourse contrastive method may also let students learn to adopt different macro schematicstructures and ways of thinking during the process of constructing the English and Chinesediscourse of the same genre, and to consciously avoid the influence of genre mode of theirmother tongue in writing English writing, so that they can set up the relevant genreawareness in a real sense, and follow the well recognized schematic structure and discoursepattern of genre in the English language, thus achieve the purpose of successfulcommunication in English.
To sum up, with 20 graduation theses of undergraduates in English Applied Linguisticsin Northwest A&F University obtained through random sampling as research object, thispaper takes the “move-step” model proposed by Swales (1990) and the structure model ofresearch papers in Applied Linguistics summarized by Yang Ruiying (2006) as thetheoretical basis and standard respectively, and conducts a quantitative analysis on themacro-structure and micro-structure of the body part of these graduation theses, andafterwards, according to the results reported in the study and based on integration of manyresearchers’ studies, the paper put forward some suggestions to help English majorsdevelop genre awareness and improve the teaching work of English major graduation thesiswriting: on the one hand, to employ the teaching methods based on genre knowledge inEnglish thesis writing class; on the other hand, to introduce the contrastive method betweenEnglish and Chinese discourse analysis in teaching, aiming at enriching the application ofgenre analysis theory on primary and secondary graduation theses in theory, and hopefullyit will be helpful for English majors to master the knowledge of genre and beneficial to thesis writing and teaching in practice.As the research focuses on the macro-structure and micro-structure of the body part ofthe English graduation theses, the other parts of the graduation theses, such as the part of“Abstract”, “Acknowledgements”, and the linguistic features (including style, sentencestructure, tense, etc) are not involved in the paper. Moreover, the selected data are limited,therefore, research scope of analysis and discussion is supposed to be further expanded andlarger corpus should be established in future research.
