摘要:On the basis of the social constructivism model of motivation as well as relevantmotivational theories, this research aims at analyzing the function of externalmotivation factors on the efficiency of English learning for nursing major students invocational college. And it is set in the classroom context.
Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1 Background of the research
The higher vocational Education is becoming increasingly important nowadays, since it is a better and quicker way to train comparatively qualified workers to meet the needs of the society than other normal education. The same is for the higher vocational education of nursing major students. Currently, English is a necessary for students majoring in nursing in vocational college. First, English serves as a tool for them to learn certain professional knowledge. Second, only with the help of English, can the medical workers understand the introduction of foreign medicine and medical equipment. And then they are able to know the usage of such things and apply them in work. Third, withthe appearance of the global village, it is likely that they need to speak English forcommunication with foreigners in hospital or in daily life. Fourth, there is anincreasingly large demand of international nurses in many foreign developedcountries. If they are willing to go abroad as an international nurse, English is of greatimportance for communication in foreign countries. Therefore, English is quiteessential for nursing major students in higher vocational college in the reality.However, most of these students’ English achievements and practical skills arepoor. Hence, it is necessary to arouse and stimulate their learning motivation throughteaching so as to improve their English proficiency.Moreover, little attention has been taken into the internal structure of externalmotivation, although some researchers have explored the types of external motivation.Therefore, it is worthy doing an empirical research on the functions of theexternal English learning motivation factors on the efficiency of language learning fornursing major students in vocational college on the basis of the social constructivismmodel of motivation developed by Lu Min and other related motivation theories.

1.2 Features of nursing major students in vocational college
The English foundation of most of the nursing major students in vocational college is comparatively poor in contrast with students in normal college and university. The reason is that they mainly perform not well in the National University Entrance Examination, and some even come from secondary vocational schools. Firstly, their English language knowledge and language skills are poor, sincethey master less vocabularies, sentence patterns and grammars in the middle school,so it is hard for them to learn the English teaching material in vocational college. Forinstance, they usually make simple errors in these aspects, such as word spelling andnoun plural forms, in exercise books and test papers.As for listening, they find it is difficult to follow the tape recorder. They are notable to grasp the key words, and they are not familiar with the pronunciation of manywords.As for speaking, they cannot speak simple sentences fluently, and some evencannot speak a correct sentence. While speaking English, their voice is low due tolack of confidence.
