摘要:The aim of this element of unit 5 is to examine key theories and debates, some of which you encountered in Unit 4, in order to develop your understanding of the cultural processes and practices that affect art, design and our culture in general.
Through the seminar format this part of the unit will also help you develop analytical and critical thinking and your research and writing skills.
Week by week the unit will introduce you to the ideas of major cultural theorists such as Walter Benjamin, Michel Foucault, Laura Mulvey, Edward Said and Eve Sedgwick.
The work of these thinkers will be explored through a wide range of thematic case studies and critical engagement with texts and images.
Students study ONE key area of critical scholarship chosen from the following:
Art in Fashion
Erotica: Glamour and Visual Pleasure
The Body, Gender and Sexuality
Post-Colonialism & Cultural Translation
Visual Cultures
A voting system will open on Blackboard for students to choose the key area they wish to study. Students will be assigned to seminar groups on a first come first served basis - once allocated, they will remain in this group. There are two seminar groups (30 spaces in each) for each theme; once a seminar is full, students will automatically be allocated to an alternative seminar programme.
Each week consists of a one-and-a-half hour seminar session (with the exception of weeks when you are working on the main study element of the unit). The seminars require students to engage with texts and images in a range of activities aimed at generating discussion, developing research and writing skills through critical analysis, leading to a 2,000 word
essay.
