Chapter 2 Literature Review
2.1 Research Abroad
In 1983,Howard Gardner,an American developmental psychologist andprofessor of education at Harvard University,published the book Frames of Mind:theTheory of Multiple Intelligences.He proposed Multiple Intelligences Theory(or thestructure of intelligences,MIT for short).This theory has had a huge impact onAmerican education and has become an important guiding ideology for education andteaching reform and practice in many western countries since the 1990s.Gardnerbelieved that intelligence is the ability of an individual to solve problems or makeproducts within the values of a certain social and cultural environment.In 1999,Intelligence Reframed:Multiple Intelligences for the 21st Century,Professor Gardner(1999:33-34)defined intelligence in more detail:Intelligence is a kind ofphysiological and psychological potential,under the background of a certain culture,its information processing function can be stimulated to solve the problemsencountered or create products.He believed that human beings have a variety ofintelligences from birth,and these intelligences all exist independently of each other.At that time,Gardner(1999:47-64)also proposed that humans possess at least eightbasic intelligences.These eight types of intelligences can be roughly divided into thefollowing three categories:“human-related intelligence”,including intrapersonal andinterpersonal intelligence;“thing-related intelligence”,including spatial intelligence,bodily-kinesthetic intelligence,logic-mathematical intelligence and naturalistintelligence;“nothing-related intelligence”,including linguistic intelligence andmusical intelligence.
2.2 Research at Home
Through reading domestic literature on English reading teaching in junior middleschools,researches are summarized as follows:
Investigate the current teaching situation,analyze the existing problems and putforward corresponding suggestions.For instance,Tian Chunyan(2007),GongZhaoxia(2011)and Jianjun Liu(2017),proposed some effective measures based on thestatus quo of reading to optimize the English reading strategies of junior middleschool students and enhance their English reading independent learning ability andreduce their learning anxiety.Wang Ying(2018)used a questionnaire to find thelanguage and non-verbal barriers in junior middle school students’English readingcomprehension,and summarized the factors affecting students’readingcomprehension barriers from multiple angles,and put forward practical suggestions.
