1.1 Importance of English reading in middle school

If students grasp the reading methods,they can improve their reading capacity, do the outside reading by themselves,develop their reading ability, and form their own reading habit which will benefitthem in their later life. And reading is an important approach for those who cannotget in touch with the foreigners. However, the situation of low-efficient teachingstill exists in some schools. Most Chinese students start to learn English when theyare in primary schools. In other words, they spend much time learning English. Butthey get less than expected. There is no denying that English has become a universallanguage, which means, if one wants to keep pace with the world, he or she muststudy English. Recently, the effective teaching has been gradually put on the agendato increase the effective teaching of English reading. With more efficient readingskills, students can develop their English learning ability, so it is necessary forteachers to offer efficient reading instruction.
Meanwhile, the middle school students, with a better physical vitality andmore mature mind, have a more lasting attention. They are in the period calledFormal Operational Stage by Piaget. They have few things to concern for andcan concentrate on what they are learning. And there are studies showing thatthe period of the early youth, for example, during the middle school, is a goodtime to study a foreign language. They can absorb more language points and domore thinking, which means, the study of the second language in this period willbe more effective. Besides, reading is a major way to get in touch with thesecond language. So effective reading is a very important issue in secondlanguage learning.


1.2 Purpose of the research
The effective teaching is a goal for many teachers. However, at present, thelow-efficient reading teaching still exists in many schools and perplexes someteachers and students. Some teachers have tried to explore the efficient ways topromote their teaching, but most of them neglect the importance of reading.Considering some teachers’ neglecting reading and the reading instruction, theessay aims to make some investigation to help to improve the English readinginstruction.The research has been done in No.4 Junior Middle School in Chaohu, Anhui, andMeiYuan Middle School in Shanghai in order to investigate the situation of thereading instruction and to explore the existing problems in English reading instructionand the corresponding suggestions that will help to improve the teachers’ readinginstruction based on the study of the effective reading instruction theories.The effective teaching has been studied by many famous researchers in China andabroad.
